Last August, the ground floor of the Eno Arts Mill was studs and drying concrete. A July 2025 flood from Tropical Storm Chantal had closed the building, and for a full year the town's arts calendar operated in borrowed rooms.
This August, the anchor comes back. The three weeks between Friday the 7th and Friday the 28th are the tightest arc of arts programming Hillsborough has seen since 2024, and they happen to reconnect the walkable geography that makes for an idyllic summer evening.
The Aug. 7 Reopening Is The Anchor
The reopening ceremony at 437 Dimmocks Mill Road is set for Friday, August 7, and the mill has already started hosting summer camps and classes again. The party runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Chapel Hill's Liquid Pleasure plays live, the studio artists open their doors, local food trucks park on site, and there is beer, wine, and non-alcoholic selections.
The year off was not idle time. The Orange County Arts Commission used the gut renovation to fold in requests it had been holding, including a dedicated ceramics studio built around donated equipment that had been sitting in storage. The evening also unveils a new brand that unifies the commission with its 501(c)3 arm, the Orange County Arts Alliance.

What Is On The Walls That Night
The gallery reopens with a show titled Chrysalis: Resilience | Renewal | Transformation, a reunion of the studio artists whose spaces flooded. If you go, these are the names on the wall:

Three Weeks Later, Last Fridays Fills In
The 28th is the town's other August evening, and the reopened mill changes what Last Fridays feels like this year. For the first time since 2024, the full downtown circuit and the west-side arts hub are both operational on the same monthly rhythm.
August 28 is one of six 2026 Art Walk dates, the middle of the season that runs from April through October. Nineteen venues participate in the year-round Art Walk, and the Makers Markets on the Old Orange County Courthouse North Lawn run May through October. The Live on the Lawn performance series takes the South Lawn from April to October, with a lineup that ranges across dance, drums, singer-songwriters, and local bands.
The action stays mostly on and around Churton Street between West Margaret Lane and West Queen Street, which is the same six-block corridor you already walk for a coffee run. Recent months' rosters give you a sense of what to expect on the 28th:
- Margaret Lane Gallery and Thomas Stevens Gallery run curated group shows on rotation
- Hillsborough Gallery of Arts and The Skylight Gallery program local artists in month-long slots
- Yonder Southern Cocktails & Brew hangs work between drinks service
- The Colonial Inn hosts the early-evening choral set on the front porch
Hours are 5:30 to 9 p.m., no ticket, no wristband. If you have never done the Walk in August, the trick is starting at the Courthouse lawn, not at the north end of Churton, so you catch the Live on the Lawn set before the light drops.
The Dinner Map Has Shifted, Too
Between last August and this one, three of downtown's more talked-about additions all came online. If you have been mostly cooking at home, the walkable dinner options are not the ones you remember.
Serratore's Pasta and Pizza opened one year ago this month. Its unannounced public opening actually landed on the August Last Friday Arts Walk in 2025, surprising the crowd already downtown. The partners signed a ten-year lease at 112 N. Churton St., in the space Radius Pizzeria held for 11 years before closing in December 2024, and they carry the pedigree of Durham's Mothers and Sons Trattoria. The menu leans on Neapolitan pizzas with an ambient-fermented dough, a cutlet section built around chicken and veal, and pastas made fresh in-house, from spaghetti to rigatoni to gluten-free gnocchi.
Vesta, on the retail side, is worth a pre-dinner detour. Francesca Morgan moved from the Monterey Bay area to open the boutique, bringing a California-meets-European sensibility with a quality-over-quantity vibe and inventory that rotates every week or two, including knits from The Endery and basics from Crown Jewel.
The Regulator finally opened this year after a slow build. Owner D.L. Brown, who has lived in Orange County for nearly half a century, describes what began as a pandemic side project inside one of Hillsborough's most storied buildings at the corner of West King and South Churton streets. Supply-chain shortages pushed the project by nearly two years, and the taproom spans three floors: basement brewhouse, main taproom, and an upstairs with a boardroom for meetings.
The steady hands are still steady. Nomad continues to occupy the renovated former Osbunn movie theater at 122 W. King St., and Eno River Brewing is running at 329 Allison St., in the unassuming blue building where you can hear the river bending toward downtown before you see the taproom.
How To Chain It Together
The reason August works in Hillsborough is that everything named above sits within a fifteen-minute walk of the Riverwalk. The paved greenway runs about 1.8 miles along the Eno between Gold Park and the James M. Johnston Nature Preserve, and it is the primary route of the NC Mountains-to-Sea Trail. It is open daily from 7 a.m. until a half hour after sunset, which in late August gives you until close to 8:30 before the trail officially closes.
A sample arc for the 7th:
- Park at the Eno River Parking Deck at the end of Nash and Kollock Street
- Walk west on the Riverwalk toward Gold Park, roughly a mile with river views on the left
- Cross to 437 Dimmocks Mill Rd. for the 6 p.m. mill opening
- Cut over to Eno River Brewing, a five-minute stroll from Gold Park, for a nightcap
- Uber or walk the Riverwalk back before closing
A sample arc for the 28th flips the direction: start on Churton for gallery hopping at 5:30, land at Serratore's or the Regulator for dinner around 8, and finish with a short Riverwalk loop from the downtown deck while the courthouse tower is still lit.
Neither evening requires a plan more elaborate than showing up. That is the point. For a year, doing any of this meant driving between temporary venues in three different towns because the anchor was down. In August, the anchor comes back, and the shortest walk in Orange County starts working again.
